photo shop for the digi pack

1
To create our digi pack we chose to use photo shop as we needed a programme that you could create different layers as we could try different fonts, photos and layout with our losing things we wanted to keep. We also needed to be able to edit photos and text and combines them together and we thought photo shop would be the best programme to use as it does all of that.

I didn’t know anything about photo shop when we started making our digi pack but my skills have improved a lot I have learnt how to use layers how to crop,  use a filter and cut around a photo. I have also learnt short cuts like holding down ctrl brings up the pipette so I can change colour to edit the photo with out changing my brush.

2
I am pleased with our digi pack so far I think it links well with our video and we have though about what images look best and I think the font and images follow our strong 50’s theme though out this project. we have also followed the conventions of a digi pack, like having the title of the album big a cross the top of the album cover, having a photo of the lead singer on the fount and having a part where the artist writes who they thank for the success of the album.

3

These three photos are where we have tried different fonts from Dafont.com. we wanted to find a 50's style font to carry on our strong 50's and 40's style theme thought out video and digi pack. We have chosen the font on number 3 as we liked it best as it felt more 50's than the other two fonts. the font is called Sailor Larry.

All the photos we cut around to get rid of the back ground so it would only be the photo of Caro (Ashley) on our digi pack. the top left we put two different filters on the photos to try and re-create the effect imelda may has on her ablum cover pic needed.! as her album has a really nice 50's look to it. we used less bright colours to give it a more vintage look to it.

designs for digipak

This was one of our ideas to have Caro poking out from behind a wall having her winking we felt this was fun and cheeky her hiding behind a wall also worked at she hids behind trees in the video there for linking the two together. But we didn't feel it was very 1950's inspired.

This idea we made but the pose didn't work it looked to static. the background would be cream with a white and blue oval.

these were some sketches we made of ideas like having That man written down the photo of that man, we tried writing Caro in the font she uses but it didn't work out very well.

This was an idea of having her sat down but it didn't work as we want her to look like she is having fun.

this cover was inspired by Imelda May from her album love tattoo as she is sat in a dinnor having a milk shake which is very 1950's but we didn't want to copy her album cover.

This is our final design to have a mid shot of caro on the front in the blue and white oval with a off white background. we feel its fun and 1950s style.

Album covers

On our digipack we want our main girl to look pretty but we don't want our album cover to just be her looking pretty like these two from taylor swift. As our girl is from the 40's, 50's she needs to look strong and this era there was a lot of changes for women as they started working and not just being a house wife.

album covers of artist we looked at

These are to of taylor swifts album covers. I liked them because they go well with the songs on the c.d, with the art work and mise-en-sence used.
The second cover (mean) i felt fitted with our video as its really over acted, set up photo.
Its a really nice strong image- it tells a story in just on photo which is a nice idea.

This is P!nk's album cover I'm Not Dead.
It has a dated look it to with the faded colours and the flowers birds and ribbon.
we will want our video to been in 50's style to go with our video and mise-en-sence.

These two are Caro Emerald's album covers.
she uses bright colours with black and bold texts to make her album covers very bright and eye catching. The second cover (deleted scenes from the cutting room floor)
is the album cover for That Man the song we are using for our video.
The cover uses the colour filter with her in black and the colour of the filter in this case red which is used in the original music video which ties the music video to the album cover.

After looking at these album covers I know its important to tie the music video and song to the album cover to link it all together. we also want our album cover to be 50's style and it must have the lead singer/ artist on the front as all of these album covers do.

1950's style video

In our video we represent 50’s style with the mise-en-sence with the costume (big blue with white spots 50's style dress with a big white under skirt), make-up and hair (red lips and big beehive hair) , props ( our old fashioned 1950's mic) and locations (no modern cars, houses people ect). We also wrote the narrative which is funny is shows the main women Caro being strong enough to chase "the man" and not just sitting back and waiting for him to come her,  which was something new in the 50’s (barriers were pushed). We have Caro looking strong and beautiful; but she doesn’t look like a Barbie doll girl with a pink dress. Which is important for the 50’s look as women were longer just house wife’s but working and getting jobs earning there own money but still being lady like. In our target audience for our video we are aiming at women who were around in 50’s as well as middle age women and then younger women/ girls who are a bit quikie and interested in different styles and the vintage look and not just present day. Caro Emerald has a strong vintage 50’s, 40’s look in her music and costumes.

locations

We have looked on Goole maps and found some good locations to film our video, we have to make sure our locations arent moduern as our video is set in the 40's and 50's.

we liked the old wall and cobbled steet we thought we could use this in one of our chase sences.

we liked these fountins we thought they would look good in the background of one of ours shots.

we like this street it has a 50's feel to it, there is also a grass square next to it which might be useful when filming. this street would be good to do one of our chase sences.

This is rocatillos where we are planning to do our 50's style spy sence, rocotillo's is a 50's style diner we will need to get permission to film inside of the diner.

We will also need to find some grass with trees to do other chase sences.

first take of filming performance

7/10/11 - We did our first take for our video we filmed our performance against the green screen. We got Ashley (who us playing our female lead role) ready by doing her hair and make-up and getting her into costume.

Then we played the song and she sang along to it while we filmed and directed her. The filming went well we got about four complete run throughs of the song as well as out opening shots like the putting on of lip stick. This footages will be used in between the narrative to make up out hole music video.

We also need some photos for our digipack and advert. we took some photos against the green screen with her all in costume.

Here are two of them we put them on white back grounds which we wont use for the digipack but looked good for now we used i movie to put the white back ground on these photos instead of the green screen i like the angles on these two photos.

make-up and hair test

This is how we are going to do the hair, in a bee hive with a hair tie round the head.

make-up we are going to put a lot of foundation all over the face, with blusher on the cheek.
The eyes will have a lot mascara, fake eyelashes and a lot of eye liner with a flick on the edge of the eye.
finishing touches a beauty spot and red lippy and using eyeliner to blacken off the eyebrow.

story boards

We started by thinking of ideas and mapping out where narrative and performace would go and the ideas for the narrative.

Then we started looking at timeings and how things would fit together but stuill not in greate detail

This is the first three pages of our final story board which we have gone to detial with timeing where the camera is going to be and what is happing.

The male costume design

to make them into a mannequin for the male character

costume design

There are our designs for our costumes for the lead female role.

This is how we are going to do the hair and make-up, big bee hive like hair with curled fringe. back eyeliner round the eye, red lippy and a beauty spot.

This is our first dress in a 50's style dress, blue with white spots which was very in. we have then used clashing read accessories to go with it. for her shoes we have chosen black and white broges.
this dress is going to be for the performance.
This dress is 40's style and we have chosen red with white spots for this and clashing blue accessories. This dress is going to be for the narrative.
this is her spy outfit for the narrative. So its the same outfit with a trench coat over the top, a .... hat, glasses and a news paper with eye holes cut into it.

mood baord

This is our ideas in picture form to go with the 40's and 50's, hair, make-up, music... which will help us as we need to plan costumes, locations and actors for our music video to get the mise-en-scene right for our video.

songs we might use for our video

We have chosen songs which we really like and had good lyics but also didnt have a good video or a video we thought we wouldnt just copy as we had our own ideas for the video to go with the song.
  • Song For Who Ever by The Beatuiful South
  • Girl Put Your records on by Corrine Bailey Rae.
  • That Man by Caro Emerald
  • Raise Your Glass by P!nk
  • Tear Drops On My Guitar by Talior Swift
In the end we went with That man by Caro Emerald as we felt we could change the video alot and we had alot of ideas to go with the sing. we didnt want to use a mainstream song which everyone knows as people would also know the video to go with it and they have a huge budget which we dont have.

caro emerald

That man- Its done in a cartoon style with her in black and white though she isn’t in cartoon style, she is in the cartoon. There is a lot of colour used in this video. The cartoon is really brightly coloured with a black background and she is black and white with a colour filter over the top. The lyrics have a nice story to them the video doesn’t really but is interesting to watch with all the colour and cartoon style.

A night like this- This video starts with a close up of a girls dress and leg which is a nice opening shot. There are fast cuts between the narrative and performance. I really like the birds eye view shot over the café. There is a lot of extreme close ups in this video which work well, of the lips, Caro singing, a little boat with a drink on it and a food with a really glitzy shoes on it getting out of a car. This video was set in a really nice location it was really beautiful and worked really well with the song.

other videos i liked

beatuiful south - song for who ever
I love this video is taking the micky out of love songs, the mise-en-scene used for the costume, there all dressed in suits like a boy band like westlife. These is a lot of close up shots of the main singer and it’s all done really seriously until they bring a pink blmonce into the video to be there big star. Which they all get jealous of until the end where they eat him.

nickelback- photograph
this video is full of fast cuts, there is alot of close ups on the band and also different objects like the mail box. there is some really nice shots though the window with the view though the window blurry. there is also a nice angle where the camera in behind some chairs but is shotting the band. there is also alot of free hand camera work which works really well in this video. in the narrative there is a really nice close up of them holding hands in the filed.

james blunt- goodbye my lover
in the performance the light is really dark, in the narrative the light is really bright. the dark light makes it feel gloomy and sad the bright light feels alot happyer. there is a mixture of mediem shots of the couple and close up of body parts like hands and them kissing. there is some mediem shots of empty car parks which looks really lonely and the lighting is also really dark and gloomy.

Talior Swift's videos

we looked at Talior swifts as she has some clever videos which have some good ideas and clever mise- en- sence with in them as well as good camera angles.

you belong to me - the establishing shot of the two houses really sets the sense fir this music video. i really like the frame of the shot throw the two windows is a really nice shot. while the song is going on the to people in the video are writing to each other on big pieces of paper which is a really nice touch. i like the use of mise-en-sence when she is singing in her bed room into a hair brush instead of a microphone. mise-en-sence is also  used in costume as taylor swift plays the geek and well as the cheerleader. she wears a brown wig and cheerleader outfit to plat the cheerleader, and glasses and normal clothes as well as band outfit to play the geek. there is one shot of them both but mostly they aren't in the same shot its cuts between them. which makes it possible for us to use this in our music video.

love story- quite cuts between present and past. good mise-en-sence with the use of costume which looks orthentic. a really sift light is used in the performance part of the video. there is a couple of nice close ups on the face and a blurry back ground. i really like the angle of the dancers from above like a birds eye view shot. there is a really nice close up of them holding hands in really long grass. also a nice twist at the end when they go back to present day.

Teardrops in my guitar- this video starts with talking (with out the music playing). nice mise-en-scene with her costume in the performance as she is wearing a really long princess dress and really heavy make-up.
i dont really like this video there is a mix of performance, where she is laying on a bed singing and narrative with her and the boy dhr likes but the video is boring to watch as there isnt any interesting angles or editing and the narrative doesnt really have a story line.

Fifteen- As she starts singing a dream like life builds up around her like the words shes singing are coming to life.  i really like the graphics used to create this video, as it looks life like but you can tell its graphicly done. There are alot of close up shots of Talior in this video. the story has a really good moral to it as shes telling girls there is more to life than you think and not to give them selfs away to any old guy. at the end she is back in real life which is a nice end to the video.
